Splitly — How to use Bill Splitter, Random Splitter and Groups

Step-by-step instructions, real examples and an interactive demo so you know exactly what happens when you split a bill.

Important (coming soon):
Login & server-sync (not available yet) — in the near future, when you create an account and sign in, your history will be stored on your account so you won't lose it if you clear browser data or switch devices. Right now history is only stored locally (browser localStorage) and can be lost if you clear cache. We'll add account-based sync soon.

1. Bill Splitter — quick steps

This is the standard flow to fairly split an expense among a group.

Steps

  • Enter number of people & click Next.
  • Add each person's Name and Amount paid.
  • Click Calculate. Splitly computes per-person share and shows the transactions needed (who pays whom).

Example & rounding

Example
Total spent: ₹2,000
A paid: ₹1,200 — B paid: ₹400 — C paid: ₹400
Per person (exact) = ₹666.67
Per person (rounded to nearest ₹5) = ₹665 (Splitly rounds to make cash-friendly values when cash mode is active).

What Splitly shows

Splitly will compute each person's balance (paid − share), then produce the minimum number of transactions to settle everyone.

For the example above the app might display:
  • B pays ₹267 to A
  • C pays ₹267 to A
Tip: we keep amounts readable by rounding (cash-friendly). The guide demo below shows exact and rounded outcomes.

2. Random Splitter — explanation

Random Splitter has three modes: Completely Random, Weighted and Percentage-range. Use it for fun-splits, lucky draws, or surprise contributions.

How to use

  • Enter total amount, number of people → Next → add names.
  • Choose a mode (Random / Weighted / Percentage) → Split Now.
Tip: Weighted mode is useful when some contributors should pay more (eg. drivers, event organisers).

3. Create Group — how it connects to the Group Dashboard

Groups let you save a reusable list of people (roommates, travel buddies, family). Creating a group here saves it and opens it in the Group Dashboard.

Flow

  1. Open Create Group → enter group name & member count.
  2. Fill member names → Save Group.
  3. Save action stores the group in localStorage and redirects to group_dashboard page where the new group is available immediately.
Tip: Use clear group names like “Flatmates – A&B” or “Goa Trip Jul 2025”.

4. History & sync notes

Every split can be saved to local history. If you’re not logged in this history is stored in your browser localStorage and can be lost if you clear browser storage.

Future sync (coming): After login, history will be synced to your account and kept safe across devices. This is not live yet — we’ll announce when ready.
